Comments from Avalon Waterways Ambassador Steve Liebmann

Respected Australian journalist and broadcaster Steve Liebmann is a regular guest aboard Avalon Waterways. We asked Steve to explain the things he loves most about river cruising:
Cruise the world's great waterways
There's something magic about watching historic villages slip by as you relax on a river cruise. The scenery is spectacular, the ships are magnificent and the entire holiday is so effortless. Each day brings you to a new destination, a new city, or an entirely new country, yet you only need to unpack once.
There's a sense of romance that comes with a river cruise, which is why my wife and I love the great rivers of Europe especially. To explore cities like Paris, Vienna and Amsterdam is something you'll remember forever, but to discover all the unexpected treasures along the rivers between them is a real delight.
Explore at your own pace
There are excellent tours included in the fare and a great choice of optional extra, but you can still explore on your own if you prefer to make your own discoveries. Best of all, travelling by river means you often sail right into the heart of town.
A floating hotel
Avalon's ships are really impressive – spacious and modern, with all the comforts of a fine hotel. The majority of staterooms have plenty of space and floor-to-ceiling glass doors so you can really appreciate the passing scenery. Each ship has a lounge and bar where you're bound to make new friends, or you can relax in the sunshine on the Sky Deck.
A culinary affair
Fine food and wine is a way of life in Europe. It's no different on Avalon's ships, where you'll be impressed by the standard of the cuisine. All meals on board are included in the price and wine at dinner is complimentary, which makes travelling in Europe much more affordable. Each day's menus offer a fantastic choice and provide a chance to taste the traditions of the region you're travelling through.
For me, the other thing that really makes Avalon stand out is its people. All the crew speak English and they're available around the clock to help you. The tipping customs in Europe can be a little daunting, but with Avalon Waterways all crew gratuities are included in the price.
A world of choice
Avalon offers amongst the widest choice of destinations and itineraries available, just one more reason why customers keep returning. In fact, the majority of customers rate their cruise as having exceeded their expectations. I feel the same way.
"I'm sure you'll appreciate the commitment Avalon Waterways makes to ensuring your holiday is most memorable"
Steve Liebmann will cruise with Avalon Waterways on the Paris to Normandy's Landing Beaches itinerary departing 4 May 2010 .
